Emerald Basin, in Yoho National Park, is a study in contrasts. The trail leads through a lush coastal rainforest, a parched alluvial fan, a towering subalpine forest and a dramatic glacial cirque. The Basin is home to yellow-bellied sapsuckers, who have left their mark in a big way. This area is also grood black and grizzly bear habitat. Be sure to hike bear aware and take precautions to prevent encounters on the trail. Because this trail involves a few turn-offs, hikers should obtain a trail map from the Yoho National Park Information Centre in Field.
